Create, read, and edit Excel files in ASP.NET Core

22 Jul 202624 minutes to read

.NET Excel Library for ASP.NET Core platform can be used to create, read, edit Excel files. These can also convert Excel files to PDF.

To quickly get started on creating an Excel document in ASP.NET Core, please check out this video:

Create a simple Excel report

The following steps illustrate creating a simple invoice-formatted Excel document in ASP.NET Core.

Prerequisites:

  • Visual Studio 2022 (17.0 or later) with the ASP.NET and web development workload installed.
  • .NET 8.0 SDK or later.
  • A user account with write permissions to the project folder.

Step 1: Create a new C# ASP.NET Core Web Application project.

Create ASP.NET Core Web application in Visual Studio

Step 2: Select the framework for the project

Select the framework

Step 3: Install the Syncfusion.XlsIO.Net.Core NuGet package with the latest stable version as a reference to your ASP.NET Core application from NuGet.org. Add XlsIO reference to the project

NOTE

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion® assemblies from trial setup or from the NuGet feed, you also have to add “Syncfusion.Licensing” assembly reference and include a license key in your projects. Please refer to this link to know about registering Syncfusion® license key in your applications to use our components.

Step 4: A default controller named HomeController.cs is added on creation of an ASP.NET Core project. Include the following namespaces at the top of the HomeController.cs file.

using Syncfusion.XlsIO;
   using System.IO;
   using Syncfusion.Drawing;
Imports Syncfusion.XlsIO
   Imports System.IO
   Imports Syncfusion.Drawing

Step 5: A default action method named Index will be present in HomeController.cs. Right-click the Index method and select Go To View where you will be directed to its associated view page, Index.cshtml.

Step 6: Add a new button in the Index.cshtml view as shown below.

@{Html.BeginForm("CreateDocument", "Home", FormMethod.Get);
       {
           <div>
               <input type="submit" value="Create Document" style="width:150px;height:27px" />
           </div>
       }
       Html.EndForm();
   }

Step 7: Add a new action method CreateDocument in HomeController.cs and include the following code snippet to create an Excel file and download it. Also place the AdventureCycles-Logo.png image file in the project root or wwwroot folder so the code can load it via a relative path.

//Create an instance of ExcelEngine
   using (ExcelEngine excelEngine = new ExcelEngine())
   {
     IApplication application = excelEngine.Excel;
     application.DefaultVersion = ExcelVersion.Xlsx;

     //Create a workbook
     IWorkbook workbook = application.Workbooks.Create(1);
     IWorksheet worksheet = workbook.Worksheets[0];

     //Adding a picture
     FileStream imageStream = new FileStream("AdventureCycles-Logo.png", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read);
     IPictureShape shape = worksheet.Pictures.AddPicture(1, 1, imageStream, 20, 20);

     //Disable gridlines in the worksheet
     worksheet.IsGridLinesVisible = false;

     //Enter values to the cells from A3 to A5
     worksheet.Range["A3"].Text = "46036 Michigan Ave";
     worksheet.Range["A4"].Text = "Canton, USA";
     worksheet.Range["A5"].Text = "Phone: +1 231-231-2310";

     //Make the text bold

Step 1: Create a new C# ASP.NET Core Web Application project using the Create .NET Project option.

Create ASP.NET Core Web application in Visual Studio

Step 2: Enter the project name and create the project.

Select the framework

Alternatively, create an ASP.NET Core Web application using the following command in the terminal (Ctrl+`):

dotnet new webapp -o CreateExcel
cd CreateExcel

Step 3: To create an Excel document in the ASP.NET Core Web app, run the following command to install the Syncfusion.XlsIO.Net.Core package.

dotnet add package Syncfusion.XlsIO.Net.Core

Add XlsIO reference to the project

NOTE

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion® assemblies from trial setup or from the NuGet feed, you also have to add “Syncfusion.Licensing” assembly reference and include a license key in your projects. Please refer to this link to know about registering Syncfusion® license key in your applications to use our components.

Step 4: A default controller named HomeController.cs is added on creation of an ASP.NET Core project. Include the following namespaces in the HomeController.cs file.

using Syncfusion.XlsIO;
   using System.IO;
   using Syncfusion.Drawing;

Step 6: Add a new button in the Index.cshtml as shown below.

@{Html.BeginForm("CreateDocument", "Home", FormMethod.Get);
       {
           <div>
               <input type="submit" value="Create Document" style="width:150px;height:27px" />
           </div>
       }
       Html.EndForm();

Read and Edit Excel file

The following code snippet illustrates how to read and edit an Excel file in ASP.NET Core.

Step 1: Add the Sample.xlsx file in the project folder (or wwwroot) and configure the project to copy it to the output directory by setting Copy to Output Directory to Copy if newer in the file properties.

//New instance of ExcelEngine is created
//Equivalent to launching Microsoft Excel with no workbooks open
//Create an instance of ExcelEngine
using (ExcelEngine excelEngine = new ExcelEngine())
{

  //Instantiate the Excel application object
  IApplication application = excelEngine.Excel;

  //Assigns default application version
  application.DefaultVersion = ExcelVersion.Xlsx;

  //A existing workbook is opened.
  IWorkbook workbook = application.Workbooks.Open("Sample.xlsx");

  //Access first worksheet from the workbook.
  IWorksheet worksheet = workbook.Worksheets[0];

//Set the text in cell A3.
  worksheet.Range["A3"].Text = "Hello World";

  //Access a cell value from Excel
  var value = worksheet.Range["A1"].Value;

  //Defining the ContentType for the Excel file.
  string ContentType = "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet";

  //Define the file name.
  string fileName = "Output.xlsx";

  //Creating stream object.
  MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream();

  //Saving the workbook to the stream in XLSX format.
  workbook.SaveAs(stream);

  stream.Position = 0;

  //Closing the workbook and disposing the engine.
  workbook.Close();
  excelEngine.Dispose();

//Creates a FileStreamResult object by using the file contents, content type, and file name.
  return File(stream, ContentType, fileName);
}
