Create, read, and edit Excel files in UWP

22 Jul 202624 minutes to read

The Syncfusion .NET Excel Library (XlsIO) for UWP platform can be used to create, read, and edit Excel files. It can also convert Excel files to PDF.

Create a simple Excel report

The following steps illustrate creating a simple Invoice-formatted Excel document in a UWP application.

Prerequisites:

  • Visual Studio 2017 or later with the Universal Windows Platform development workload installed.
  • Ensure the project targets a supported UWP build and that NuGet Package Manager is available.

Step 1: Create a new C# Blank App (Universal Windows) project.

Create UWP project

Step 2: Install the Syncfusion.XlsIO.UWP NuGet package as a reference to your UWP application from NuGet.org.

Install Syncfusion.XlsIO.UWP Nuget Package

NOTE

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion® assemblies from trial setup or from the NuGet feed, you also have to add “Syncfusion.Licensing” assembly reference and include a license key in your projects. Please refer to this link to know about registering Syncfusion® license key in your applications to use our components.

Step 3: Right-click the MainPage.xaml file in Solution Explorer, select View Code, and add a new click handler named OnButtonClicked in MainPage.xaml.cs. Then add a new button in the MainPage.xaml as shown below.

<Page
       x:Class="GettingStarted_UWP.MainPage"
       xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
       xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
       xmlns:local="using:GettingStarted_UWP"
       xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"
       xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"
       mc:Ignorable="d"
       Background="{ThemeResource ApplicationPageBackgroundThemeBrush}">

       <Grid>
           <Button x:Name="button" Content="Create Document" Click="OnButtonClicked" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
       </Grid>
   </Page>

Step 4: Include the following namespaces in the MainPage.xaml.cs file.

using Syncfusion.XlsIO;
   using System.Reflection;
   using Windows.Storage.Pickers;
   using Windows.Storage;
   using Windows.UI;
   using System.IO;
Imports Syncfusion.XlsIO
   Imports System.Reflection
   Imports Windows.Storage.Pickers
   Imports Windows.Storage
   Imports Windows.UI
   Imports System.IO

NOTE

Before proceeding, add the AdventureCycles-Logo.png image to the project and set its Build Action to Embedded Resource in the file properties so it can be loaded using GetManifestResourceStream.

Step 5: Include the following code snippet in the click event of the button in MainPage.xaml.cs to create an Excel file, save it as a physical file, and open the file for viewing.

//Create an instance of ExcelEngine.
   using (ExcelEngine excelEngine = new ExcelEngine())

     //Access first worksheet from the workbook instance.
     IWorksheet worksheet = workbook.Worksheets[0];

     Stream inputStream = executingAssembly.GetManifestResourceStream("GettingStarted_UWP.AdventureCycles-Logo.png");

A complete working example of how to create an Excel file in UWP in C# is present on this GitHub page.

By executing the program, you will get the Excel file as below.

Read and Edit Excel file

The following code illustrates how to read and edit an Excel file in UWP.

//Create an instance of ExcelEngine
using (ExcelEngine excelEngine = new ExcelEngine())
{
  IApplication application = excelEngine.Excel;

  //Instantiates the File Picker.
  FileOpenPicker openPicker = new FileOpenPicker();
